Falls & How To Prevent Them

Everyone falls, what’s the big deal?

Did you know that according to stats Canada an estimated 20-30% of seniors fall one ore more times each year?  Falls cause 85% of senior’s hospitalizations and 95% of hip fractures.  Out of the 85%, 50% of all falls causing hospitalization happen at home and over 1/3 of all seniors are admitted to long-term care following a hospitalization due to a fall.  Falls can result in chronic pain, reduced mobility, loss of independence and even death.

Yes, it is a big deal.

Causes:

  • Balance
  • Muscle weakness
  • Eyesight
  • Hearing,
  • Medications
  • Blood pressure
  • Dementia
  • Age-related disease

*The average Canadian senior had to stay in hospital 10 days longer for falls than for any other cause.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor.

The reasons why seniors don’t tell their doctor or talk to their loved ones about having a fall at home are many, for example they may feel shame or judgement that they can no longer live independently. After a fall seniors may have anxiety about leaving their home for social or regular daily activities in case they fall again thus leading to isolation and depression.

The good news is there are ways to prevent falls.

Effective Preventions:

  • Stay physically active
  • Place regularly used items within easy reach
  • Have your eyes and hearing tested regularly
  • Find out about the side effects of your medications
  • Get enough sleep
  • Use an assistive device if you need help feeling steady when you walk.
  • Clear up clutter in high traffic areas
  • Repair or remove tripping hazards
  • Install grab bars and handrails
  • Make sure your home is well lite
  • Wear appropriate foot wear, indoors and outdoors.

Fear of falling doesn’t need to rule your life.
